Read This Letter Now As I Am Going To Share With You About Priceless Lessons And Vast Experiences From My Business, Striking A Balance, Networking To Succeed, Harness The Power Of The Media, Leadership, Handling of Crisis And Opportunities, Attitudes Of An Entrepreneur, Whether To IPO Or Not...

From Kenny Yap

Dear Business Owners and Aspiring Entrepreneurs,

If you want to learn and know more in thriving a good and successful business, the art of networking, striking a balance, handling of crisis and opportunities, expanding your business or even self-enrichment, you should not be missing this!

Many of you have heard and seen me speak publicly about my family’s business, Qian Hu Corporation Limited, but after more than 18 years in the fish-farming industry spent running the business, learning so many priceless lessons and gathering such vast experiences, I felt writing a book to share them all was only appropriate.

The chapters in this book have been written and arranged such that you, the reader, can choose to start and stop at any chapter.

One of the chapters mentioned how my family background that led to the creation of Qian Hu. My father and uncle started out as pig farmers. In 1985, the government's bid to stem pollution and free up land for residential development saw the eradication of our pig farm. We converted the farmland into concrete ponds, breeding guppies for local ornamental fish exporters but soon later were wiped out by a severe storm and subsequent flooding. Despite having little product knowledge, my family went on to invest in high-fin loaches which are highly profitable. We didn’t know that high-fin loaches are extremely sensitive to little changes in their environment and all the construction work on our farm stressed out the loaches, all 4,000 of our stock died and we nearly went bankrupt! What we have learned from here are the importance of diversification, not to be greedy and know your products well! Qian Hu corporate logo, the high-fin loach will always remind us of these early struggles.

It was hardest writing the chapter about striking a balance. With so many things and people in your life when you run a business, striking a balance is nothing short of an art form that also requires you to apply a fair bit of logic and some practice. I believe that no entrepreneur can reserve every Friday afternoons for golf, or rush back from every overseas trip to spend weekends with the family. Entrepreneurs need to remain more flexible with their time. "While it may be perfectly alright to prioritize the family, some people become so rigid that they lose focus and life becomes a chore, not a pleasure. In business, you cannot afford to be rigid. Be as flexible as possible. If we are too rigid, we become like robots, and life begins to lack significance."

There’s a chapter about networking for success because in this day and age, it’s not what you know but who you know. You’ll discover it’s not difficult to network quickly and effectively if you’re sincere and respectful of everyone.  I will share with you in detail how I learned to be a networker and how networking has benefited me personally as well as benefited Qian Hu from a business perspective.

There's also a chapter about leadership mentioning that great leaders never use domination as a tactic, but rather, we possess the art of persuading people to work toward a common goal. A leader or entrepreneur should have a 'FEAR NOT' attitudes and a high tolerance for ambiguity, mistakes and uncertainty.

I can still recall how I bought a tiny gold fish with 50 cents of my pocket money when I was seven years old. When I happily took it home, some of my brothers laughed at me because the gold fish had a broken tail. But they didn't bother me because in my head, as long as I liked the fish, it was a good fish. I now realizes how important such a trait is for an entrepreneur-- not being swayed by the opinions of others. After all, "As long as we can live up to our own conscience, we need not seek approval from others."

There is a section about public listing because I believe every business should be listed. It ensures continuity for the business and raises the level of corporate transparency as outside parties will force you to abide by the rules of good corporate governance.

Finally, take with you the Business Bible of Kenny Yap The Fish and embark on your next wonderful, exciting venture. Enjoy!

Reading Kenny’s story is an inspirational journey - a journey that I highly recommend all budding and established entrepreneurs to take. I must admit that I have never been interested in the amazing world of fishes until I heard The Fish talk about the co-relationship between the different types of fish and the ways of an entrepreneur. I am so glad that Kenny has included a chapter on illustrating this in this book - it will be a chapter that I will constantly go back to for inspirational tips.
I have often said that we can only excel in whatever we do if we have the passion in us. Kenny’s story clearly illustrates his passion for life and I believe that this is fundamentally the driving force behind this amazing entrepreneur. The Fish clearly lacks nothing in life except that his fish will always need my water.
